SAP Netweaver BW versus traditional ETL to DW approach???

SAP Netweaver BW is a data viertualization platform.  So, when is it appropriate to use this technology versus traditional ETL to DW technlogies??  and when would traditional ETL to DW technology be more appropriate??  Need clarification on what variables would need to be analyzed in making this decision...
